When it comes to health, even the smallest choices can shape your future. November is National Diabetes Month, which makes it the perfect time to think about what those choices look like for you.
The numbers are not good: one in three American adults has prediabetes. Being overweight, over 45, having high blood pressure, or being Black, Hispanic, Asian American, or Native American puts you at increased risk. But the good news is that getting proactive about your health doesn’t mean completely overhauling your life. It’s about finding simple, everyday actions that can add up to a big difference. Whether you’re 100 percent on board or just starting a wellness journey, taking small steps now can set you on the path toward the healthiest version of you.
Preventing diabetes doesn’t have to be about strict diets or grueling exercise routines. It can start with small, realistic steps. Adding a 15-minute walk after dinner, choosing whole grains over refined carbs, or just finding a moment to de-stress can really make a difference over time. These tiny tweaks can add up, helping you feel more energized and less overwhelmed.
Sharing your goals and getting support is one of the best things you can do to stay on track. Having a buddy to cheer you on when you hit a bump in the road can make all the difference. Find a friend, family member, or coworker to share the journey with you and provide that extra layer of support.
If you only see a primary care provider when you’re sick, it’s time to get them on your team! A good primary care provider is your ultimate health partner, helping you stay ahead of problems by regularly monitoring blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, and other key health indicators. If something's a little off, they can suggest realistic changes that fit your lifestyle or offer medically managed weight loss. Think of your primary care provider as someone who’s in your corner, making sure you're not navigating this journey alone.
Even with a team in place, it’s easy to get caught up in what you “should” be doing — cutting sugar, exercising more, eating better. But don’t forget to give yourself some credit for the things you’re doing right. Celebrate those small wins: drinking more water, getting a good night’s sleep, or finally booking a check-up. Progress is progress, no matter how small.
During National Diabetes Month, take some time to check in with yourself — and your primary care provider. Consider setting up a wellness visit to talk about your health goals and come up with a plan that feels right for you. You don’t have to do it all at once. The most important thing is to keep moving forward and know that you have a team ready to support you every step of the way.
Remember, it’s not about perfection; it’s about progress toward a healthier, happier life. Let’s take it one step at a time, together.
